The Kia Sorento is great value for money. It’s large, spacious, well equipped and comes with a seven-year warranty. The cheaper models in the Sorento range make more financial sense, however.

PROS:  The Sorento offers a relaxing drive, has an impressive interior and comes with a seven year warranty.

CONS:  For a 4x4, it has questionable off-road ability and the styling is a little bland.

Behind the Wheel

The speed sensitive steering is nicely weighted and the 4x4 handles rough terrain fairly well. Light controls and good roadholding make the driving experience pleasant and completely independent suspension irons out bumps and imperfections on the road. Tyre noise is low and grip and composure on the road are impressive but the Sorento's off-road capabilities are limited.

In terms of power, this model delivers 194 bhp at 3800 rpm with 311lb-ft of torque. This allows the Sorento to get from 0-62 mph in just 9.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 118mph.

Looks & Equipment

The interior of the Sorento is almost as attractive as the exterior and equipment wise you get air conditioning, a six-speaker stereo with MP3 connectivity, leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever, metallic dash and door trim, climate and cruise control, heated front seats, 18-inch alloys, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and rear spoiler.

The dash looks great and the black interior is finished to a high standard with the dials surrounded by metal and glowing red when the car is started. On top of this, the exterior of the car is handsome, if a little dull.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Sorento is a fairly new model, so it is still unclear how reliable it is likely to be. However, Kia have a good reputation for reliability and offer a seven year/100,000 mile warranty.

The car also comes with a five star NCAP rating for safety, making it a great investment for families. The car comes with six airbags, active front headrests, seatbelt pre-tensioners, stability control, downhill brake control, descent control and hill-start assist as standard features.

The practicality of the car is also high and, as a seven seater, there is plenty of room for passengers within the cabin. Naturally the increased seating means the boot space is limited when all seats are occupied, with just 111-litres on offer. This can be increased to an impressive 1,525 litres by removing the rear seats.

Value for Money

Considering its 4x4 status, the Sorento KX-3 2.2 CRDi Auto offers relatively reasonable running costs. Although the CO2 emissions are relatively high (194g/km, putting the Sorento in VED band J), fuel consumption is reasonable at 38.2mpg on the combined cycle.

Although the price tag of £32,495 is very reasonable for the amount of car you get, the Sorento KX-3 2.2 CRDi Auto is nearly 10 grand more expensive than the base model. You get a lot more kit, obviously, but the cheaper Sorentos make more financial sense. If you have £32,495 to spend on a 4x4, an entry level BMW X3 is a much better bet and will depreciate more slowly.
