Hyundai answer a question nobody was asking by offering a three-door coupe with an extra door - a four door coupe, if you will. It's alright but the engine's a bit asthmatic, it doesn't handle that well and it isn't all that practical.

PROS:  Good looking, reasonably priced

CONS:  Unspectacular performance, mediocre handling, the extra door is a bit pointless

Behind the Wheel

The Hyundai's 1.6-litre petrol engine develops 138bhp and 123lb-ft of torque which is enough to get the Veloster from 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 124mph. The Veloster is by no means fast and the handling is a bit of a letdown too.

The ride is firm but the chassis provides precious little grip and the steering is vague and lifeless.

Looks & Equipment

The Veloster is an attractive car and has very quirky styling which is likely to appeal to a great number of people. You also get a decent amount of kit with alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, cruise control, parking sensors, leather seats, CD player with MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth all coming as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Hyundai have a good repuation for reliability and there is no reason to doubt the quality of the Veloster. Hyundai also supply a five year unlimited mileage warranty as standard.

Practicality is only average. The Veloster can seat five occupants and has four doors to make access to the car more convenient. The boot space is good with 320 litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1015 litres with the rear seats down.

The Veloster should also be very safe and scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.

Value for Money

The Veloster is priced at £21,745 which is impressive considering the amount of standard equipment included.

It's not the cheapest car to run in the world - 44.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 145g/km putting it under VED band F.
