Oh dear. Hyundai's i800 is one of the least desirable cars on the market today. It's fairly terrible to drive and deeply embarrassing to be seen in. However, how many other cars offer eight seats for 23 grand?

PROS:  Eight-seat practicality, low price, good reliability

CONS:  Ugly, horrible to drive, expensive to run

Behind the Wheel

The i800's 2.5-litre diesel engine develops 168bhp and 324lb-ft of torque which means 0-62mph takes 14.5 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 112mph. This isn't bad considering the sheer size of the thing but remember, these figures will drop considerably when you load the car up with passengers and luggage.

The ride is acceptable but the handling is atrocious and the i800 rolls through the bends like nothing else you can buy. If you try to corner with any sort of verve, the children in the back are going to be sick.

Looks & Equipment

Hmm... The i800 isn't actually a bad looking car for a people carrier. It's very boxy but has a stylish front end which livens it up a bit. I am, however, speaking in relative terms.

The interior is very low-rent but you do get a respectable level of standard kit. Alloys, air-con, electric windows, rear parking sensors and a CD player with MP3 connectivity all come as standard. You can also spec sat-nav for £515, leather seats for £1235 and metallic paint for £495.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is acres of space in the i800 thanks to its sheer size. Not only can you seat 8 people in relative comfort but there is also a sizeable amount of boot space even with all the seats in position - 851-litres to be precise.

Euro NCAP have not tested this car but it does come with driver and passenger airbags as standard and should therefore be relatively safe.

Hyundais are very well made cars and the i800 should be very reliable. Hyundai also supply a five year unlimited mileage warranty to protect you in case anything should go wrong.

Value for Money

At £23,545, the i800 is remarkable value and it is impossible to seat more people for less. The running costs are a bit steep but we can forgive the i800 this due to its sheer size. You'll struggle to top 32mpg and CO2 emissions of 231g/km mean hefty tax bills under VED band L. Insurance is also pricey under group 31 and the i800 will depreciate very quickly. Buy one second hand instead.
