The DS5 is the stylish hatchback that is designed to appeal to those who want the practicality of a hatchback with the style that isn’t normally found in these cars, and there is no doubt that the DS5 does have a number of nice touches. However, the ride delivered by the firm suspension is uncomfortable, but the engine is a real highlight in this car.

PROS:  Excellent fuel efficiency combined with good engine performance makes this an attractive prospect, with a stylish design that is really attractive and also has a refined cabin too.

CONS:  The ride included with this car is very firm which is uncomfortable on many occasions, and the purchase price for this version with the Hybrid engine is significantly more than the standard diesel models.

Behind the Wheel

The steering to be found in the DS5 is not bad at all, responding quickly to the wheel with plenty of grip while cornering, but it does feel a little inert. The ride is the main problem with the vehicle as it does feel too firm for British roads, transmitting every bump and pothole to the passengers in the cabin. The driving position is good with plenty of adjustment available in the steering wheel and the driving seat, and the fact that the head-up display can be adjusted to suit the height of the driver is very innovative.

The real star in this version of the DS5 is the engine, and while most people will consider hybrid engines purely for their efficiency, this can also deliver good performance too. Acceleration from 0-62mph is achieved in only 8.3 seconds, and the car can achieve a top speed of 131mph. Another great feature of the hybrid engine is that it is really very quiet, offering only a gentle rumble at motorway speeds and being completely silent around town.

Looks & Equipment

The DS5 is a very attractive car with a windscreen that is angled into a very streamlined body, and the roof is moulded into one which is contrasted in colour with the rest of the bodywork. The back end has a moulded spoiler into the hatchback door, and a practical boot door with a tail light cluster that is split over the body of the car and the boot door itself. Inside the cabin is classy and stylish, but one feature to note is that many of the buttons on the centre console are a little small and fiddly to use.

The level of kit included with this version of the DS5 is very good, with the sensational alloy wheels being a big selling point, as they really are stunning. Inside the cabin there is air conditioning and cruise control to make the car more civilized on long journeys, and the CD player has an MP3 input.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is no doubt that the DS5 is designed to balance style and practicality, and the cabin itself can easily accommodate four adults, but adding a fifth does make things a little squashed in the back seats. The boot isn’t particularly spacious, and is affected by the size and extra equipment in this hybrid car. Citroen don’t generally have an excellent reliability record, but the DS5 does feel well made.

It is also a very safe car to drive, with a range of airbag to look after occupants in the front and rear of the car should it become involved in a collision. There is also ESP, ABS and traction control to ensure that the driver remains firmly in control, and these have helped the car achieve five stars in the Euro NCAP safety test.

Value for Money

The extra technology that is found under the bonnet in this model is reflected in the price of £30,100, but the balance of performance and efficiency may attract many people to pay this.

The efficiency of the diesel hybrid engine is also remarkable, with the car able to achieve an average 68.9mpg, which is more than the most efficient standard diesel available. The insurance costs are quite reasonable, but Citroen does traditionally suffer with depreciation. The car is supplied with a three year unlimited mileage warranty and also comes with roadside breakdown assistance.
