CarSite Verdict:  3/5
The C1 1.0i VT 3dr lacks rear seat and boot space but its fuel economy makes it an ideal and appealing compact car for those who drive in and about the city. Its cabin is made of hard plastics but it is well-designed and meticulously put-together. Its tax, insurance and fuel costs are low.

PROS:  The Citroen C1 1.0i VT 3dr is very affordable and offers low running costs. It is fun to drive and has fresh styling.

CONS:  Standard equipment in the Citroen C1 1.0i VT 3dr is sparse. Rivals such as the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107 are better equipped. The engine and the cabin lack refinement. Interior space is restricted with the driving position lacking fine adjustment.

Behind the Wheel

The C1 1.0i VT 3dr is much like its sister cars - the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo. It is not the most advanced car in its class but offers light, precise steering which makes the car agile and highly manoeuvrable. The C1 is not designed for motorway cruising and at high speed the petrol engine can be whiny and road and wind noise are obviously apparent.

The 1-litre 3-pot petrol engine develops 68bhp and 69lb-ft of torque, making for a decent 0-62mph time of 13.7 seconds and a top speed of 98mph.

Looks & Equipment

The driving position is not for everyone since there is no seat adjustment and the steering column can only be adjusted vertically. However, the interior is fun and fresh; the cylindrical heater control is transparent and glows orange in the dark.

The C1 1.0i VT 3dr has a woeful equipment level. You get a CD player with MP3 connectivity and that's about it. You have step up to VTR range if you want air-conditioning, remote central locking, electric front windows and more. The only option available to you is metallic paint at £420.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The C1 1.0i VT 3dr comfortably seats four average-height adults but, with a boot space measuring 139 litres, they'd better be travelling light.

The C1 gets two airbags - one for the driver and one for the front passenger - ABS and side impact bars. Its Euro NCAP Occupant rating is 4/5, NCAP Child is 4/5 and NCAP Pedestrian is 2/5. The C1 1.0i VT 3dr is also fitted with an engine immobiliser.

Value for Money

Priced at £8,695, the Citroen C1 1.0i VT is very affordable. However, the Kia Picanto and Hyundai i10 are cheaper and have more standard equipment.

Fuel economy is impressive at 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 103g/km put it in VED band B. Insurance should also be cheap with the C1 1.0i VT 3dr coming under insurance group 2. Depreciation is steep and after three years, your £8,695 car will be worth just under three and a half grand.
