The Berlingo Multispace e-HDi 90 Airdream EGS6 VTR is favoured for its economical engine, ample space and its affordable price tag. It is a practical proposition as a cheap family car.

PROS:  The Berlingo Multispace is a practical family car which is spacious enough to comfortably carry both passengers and luggage. The frugal engine is quite impressive and though it is based on a van, it feels car-like to drive.

CONS:  Practical and frugal though it is, the Berlingo is not a looker and equipment levels are disappointing. The diesel engine is economical but lacks torque. Some of the materials used in the cabin are of a low quality.

Behind the Wheel

The Berlingo Multispace e-HDi 90 Airdream EGS6 VTR offers a comfortable and smooth ride. Despite lacking in agility, the car handles surprisingly well, holding on to the road through bends with minimal body-roll. The ride is supple and the diesel engine is refined. Visibility is excellent.

The Berlingo Multispace e-HDi 90 Airdream EGS6 VTR's 1560cc engine develops 92bhp and 170 lb-ft of torque. This gets it from 0-62mph in 14.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 103mph.

Looks & Equipment

Looks-wise, the Berlingo is a van with windows, so you'll not be turning any heads at the wheel of this car.

The Berlingo Multispace e-HDi 90 Airdream EGS6 VTR is mid-range and comes with plenty of standard kit including front electric windows, CD player, split-folding rear bench, front foglights, electrically adjustable heated mirrors, remote central locking and more. Optional extras include metallic paint (£440), air-conditioning (£650), rear parking sensors (£270), and front side airbags (£600).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Citroen Berlingo Multispace has undergone Euro NCAP testing and scored 4 out of a possible 5 for occupant protection. Standard for this version are the twin front airbags but you have to pay extra for the installation of side and curtain airbags.

Storage is not an issue with the Berlingo. Aside from its roomy boot of 675 litres (expandable to 3000 litres), it has plenty of storage spaces under the seats, on the roof, in the footwells and on the dashboard. This is a 5-seater which can actually seat 5 passengers comfortably. Its rear seats could easily fit three children in car seats. For security, standard equipment includes deadlocks and remote and central locking.

Although Citroen does not have the best track record for reliability, the French firm have been building the Berlingo since the 1990s so reliability issues should be few and far between.

Value for Money

The base price for the Citroen Berlingo Multispace e-HDi 90 Airdream EGS6 VTR 5dr is £14,865 and you really are getting quite a lot of car - or van, depending on your view - for your money.

The Citroen Berlingo is a very flexible MPV. If you have small children to take to school or to drive about town, this model is ideal. With an economy figure of 56.5 mpg, the Berlingo should be cheap to run. CO2 emissions of 130g/km put it in VED band D and group 8 insurance will make for cheap premiums.
