The Chrysler Ypsilon is designed to compete with the Fiat 500, VW Polo and Ford Fiesta. Despite its handsome exterior and seemingly stylish interior, the Ypsilon falls short of its rivals behind the wheel.

PROS:  The Chrysler Ypsilon 1.2 SE 5dr has a distinctively unique and sporty styling. It is fitted with the underpinnings of a Fiat 500, Panda and the Ford Ka. The compact hatchback is fuel-efficient and thus has low running costs. It’s a “green” car based on its low emission ratings and is a rare sight in the UK.

CONS:  Its 1.2 engine has no pull and is rather slow. There are mixed-reviews on its styling as some car critics find it odd. The standard of build is said to be below average and that upon closer inspection, the seemingly stylish interior is not classy at all.

Behind the Wheel

The Chrysler Ypsilon is a 5-door hatchback fitted with a 1242cc, 4-cylinder, and 8-valve engine that revs 69 bhp at 5500 rpm and a torque of 75 lb-ft at 3000 rpm. The engine is slow but it acceleration speed of 14.5 s to reach 62 mph and its top speed of 101 mph are acceptable.

The combined mpg of 57.6 could very well translate to a car that is practical to drive about in the city and country. However, the Ypsilon’s engine will certainly struggle on the open motorway. Its suspension is quite firm and won’t readily absorb the bumps brought on by potholes. Car grip is a concern more so on winding country roads. Steering is slow and lacks weight. Aside from a noisy engine, wind and road noise are also expected. Rear visibility is a problem.

Looks & Equipment

The high driving position, the high-mounted gear level and centrally located instruments make for a mini-MPV driving experience instead of a supermini. However it is hard to get into a comfortable driving position as the steering wheel lacks reach adjustment and has a cramped pedal area. The Ypsilon is marketed as a mini luxury car and its interior seems to support that; but upon closer look, the Ypsilon is still a fairly “cheap” car.

The SE trim is fitted with wheel alloys, air-conditioning, heater door mirrors, leather steering wheel, split/fold seats, CD/MP3 player and leather seats. Options such as climate control, electric panoramic sunroof and more amount to £2,700. The Fiat 500 is less expensive and yet it is on par with the Ypsilon’s standard kits

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Ypsilon’s platform is based on the Fiat 500 and Panda. However, the Ypsilon has a larger boot space of 245 litres which could be extended up to 820 litres with the seats folded. All the models have 5-doors which is more practical. This car is a 5-seater but with its small dimensions rear seats might not be as comfortable for the rear passengers especially on long trips.

Safety-wise, the Ypsilon is on par with its rivals. It has 6 air bags, traction control, belt pre-tensioners, and Isofix and three-point centre belt. Stability control is only available for automatic gearbox. Security kits include an engine immobilizer, alarm, central and remote locking and locking wheelnuts.

This model has not been tested and rated by the Euro NCAP. However, with its platform the same as the Fiat 500, this model and version should rate well. Its CO2 emission rating is 115g/km. Warranty is 60000 miles in 3 years.

Value for Money

Priced at £11,995, the Chrysler Ypsilon is quite affordable. However, it is more expensive than some of its rivals. On the positive side, this version has low running costs. It is cost-effective and fuel-efficient as it has a high mpg of 57.6 and an emission rating of 115g/km. This version falls under group insurance 4 and under Road Tax Band C.

For the budget-conscious buyer, the 0.9 litre petrol engine has a better mpg of 67 and CO2 emissions of 99g/km. For those who drive on the motorway the 1.3 litre diesel M-Jet engine is a better buy as it has an mpg of 74.

Resale value of the Ypsilon 1.2 SE is not favourable due to heavy depreciation. After a year, its resale price could well be under £7,000.
