The Spark’s looks are distinctive. For a city car, it is spacious and is cheap to run. However this car is certainly not on par with the technological advancements of its rival brands such as the Ford Fiesta hatchback and the VW Up hatchback.

PROS:  The Chevrolet Spark 1.0 LS is a practical city car as it’s affordable and very efficient. It is easy to drive as it handles well with natural-feel steering. It looks smart and has a sound interior with adequate rear passenger seats.

CONS:  Though the Spark looks smart its overall design translates to something clumsy and fussy when on the road. The interior is well-planned but some of the materials used (cheap plastics) are inferior. The entry level edition is sparingly equipped.

Behind the Wheel

The Spark’s funky looks make it a popular choice as an entry level car. Its low running cost is also a strong selling point. For a compact city car, its steering is responsive and its ride is quite comfortable thanks to its suspension that tends to absorb bumps and road imperfections with ease.

The Spark is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and 4 cylinder, 16-valve engine. Its 995cc engine is competent allowing the Spark to reach 62mph in 15.5s. It is able to produce 70bph at 6400 rpm and a torque of 68lb-ft at 6400. This city car’s top speed is 96 mph. With a combined mpg of 55.4, it is fairly economical. Body roll is not an issue for the model when driving around town, where the Spark is in its element, although performance drops at higher speeds. Engine refinement is good, as is visibility, though road and wind noise are somewhat intrusive.

Looks & Equipment

Chevy’s Spark comes in bold and attractive colors. The interior is highly distinctive and its detailing is quite sporty and racy. The dashboard’s layout is bold and easy to use, while the seats are comfortable and provide decent support. The driver’s seat has height adjustment, however the steering wheel adjustment is not standardised, and gear changing could be smoother.

Entry level trim is very basic. The standard equipment provided includes air conditioning, electric front windows, power-steering, split fold seats and more. Options for this version include alloy wheels, metallic paint and ESP.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Chevrolet’s Spark has not really established roots in the UK. The entry level car is very affordable and is a good choice for town driving. It affords the urban motorists a chance for a better ride in the city and on short country road trips. However, some critics say that though the Spark is affordable and acceptable, there are less expensive European rivals which perform just as well.

The Spark earned a rating of 4/5 on the crash tests done by the Euro NCAP. It would have scored a perfect 5/5 if only the stability control was standardised. The high level of safety equipment includes 6 standard airbags, pedal retraction system, seatbelt pre-tensioners and anti-lock brakes.

Security-wise, the kit is very basic. Central locking is the only form of security available, with an alarm as an option. The boot space of 170 litres can be expanded to 568 litres with the rear seats folded down. CO2 emission are 119g/km.

Value for Money

Priced at £9,185, the Spark is cheap. However, this is the starting price for a car with very basic features and equipment.

The model has received acceptable reviews, although there are cars available for similar prices with a better standard specification and better performance. The car falls under insurance group 3 and has a tax road band of C. The warranty for this unit is 100,000 miles in 3 years.
