The ATS could well be the car from Cadillac which breaks the European market, including the UK. Whilst we Brits like to put substance before style, we don’t mind if there is a good balance of both, and the ATS might have achieved that.

PROS:  Smooth and powerful engine gives a good performance and there are plenty of gadgets.

CONS:  It might struggle against its well established European rivals and the looks won’t be for everyone.

Behind the Wheel

The ATS has a fair amount of power behind it with the 2.0 turbo engine which generates 272bhp and 260Ib ft. In turn the Cadillac ATS can do 0-62 in 5.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 149 MPH, so performance levels are pretty impressive.

The ride is also well settled, with a suspension system which offers the driver options, allowing them to tweak the suspension to their preference.

Looks & Equipment

Generally, the Cadillac ATS’s looks have been well received, and from most angles we agree, but nose of the car looks a bit too sloped. On the other hand this helps with road visibility, which is probably more important.

The Equipment in the 2.0 turbo is ample and includes leather upholstery, electric windows, cruise control and an impressive ‘CUE‘ (Cadillac User Experience) screen.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The ATS is relatively practical for a car of its class, but it is cramped in the back, and rear passengers will struggle for decent leg room. Up front there are no problems and it is easy to get comfy. The boot is pretty small unfortunately, leaving you with only 289 litres to play with.

Safety shouldn’t be an issue, with Cadillac introducing innovative features such as the Safety Alert Seat and Lane Departure Warning system, whereby the driver’s seat vibrates if you are accidently drifting into another lane.

Value for Money

Considering all the equipment that comes with the ATS, the price seems pretty reasonable, and it could work out cheaper to buy than its German rivals. On the other hand residuals won’t be as good with the Cadillac. The 2.0 Turbo Elegance does 34.4 MPG which isn’t bad, but isn’t up there with the best of the class.
