BMW are following in Mercedes's footsteps by trying to fill almost imperceptibly small gaps in the market with brand new cars. The X6 is a fine example of this. It's as well-made and as prestigious as you'd expect a Beemer to be, but it's a fairly ugly and rather pointless addition to the BMW range.

PROS:  The X6 is powerful, refined and superbly built.

CONS:  It is strictly a 4-passenger vehicle and the sloping roofline limits the rear headroom. It's pricey and it's not exactly what you'd call a looker.

Behind the Wheel

The X6 XDrive 35i is an 8-speed, 24-valve, 6 cylinder automatic 4x4 which is powered by 2979cc engine.

The engine develops 306 bhp at 5800 rpm and 295 ft-lb of torque, allowing it to reach a top speed of 149mph. The transition from a purring cruiser to a roaring sports car is very smooth and quiet.

The X6 is excellent to drive thanks to a finely balanced chassis and crisp, responsive steering.

Looks & Equipment

The X6 has a bit of a split personality -- on one hand it's a coupe and on the other it's a 4x4. Because of this, it looks a mess. It still has the snob factor but it is by no means a good looking car.

The X6 comes with climate control, auto dimming rear view mirror, xenon headlights with headlight washing and automatic levelling, CD player with MP3 player, steering-wheel mounted gearshift paddles, parking sensors and leather seats. Options include an electric sunroof, hands-free phone kit, DVD player, adaptive cruise control, and sat-nav.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Although it has not been tested by Euro NCAP, the X6 should be very safe indeed and it comes with a host of airbags and driver aids.

There is a decent amount of boot space in the X6 with 570 litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1450 litres available with the rear seats down.

BMW has an excellent reputation for building reliable cars, and there is little to suspect that the X6 will be anything different.

Value for Money

At £47,130, the BMW X6 XDrive 35i 5dr is not exactly cheap, however it should benefit from solid residuals.

Group 47 insurance and band L Road Tax mean that the X6 will not be cheap to run. You should only manage 28mpg on the combined cycle too, so trips to the pumps will be fairly frequent.

BMW X6 M 5dr - March 2012
In terms of performance, the X6 M is hard to fault. However, what exactly is it for? You're better off buying an M3 or M5, both of which are faster, cheaper and better looking.
