The 335d is also practical, with plenty of space for driver and passengers and a fairly spacious boot.
PROS: The 335d Sport Plus is a near flawless car with immense power, handling and a very efficient engine to top it off.
CONS: A very expensive car, especially considering that the cheaper and less powerful diesels in the 3 Series coupe range are still excellent cars. The suspension on the Sport Plus is also very firm, which can be uncomfortable.
The 335d Sport Plus has a 286 bhp engine delivering 427 lb-ft of torque at 1750-2250 rpm and reaches 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
The Sports suspensions is the firmest on offer in the range and this means the ride can be uncomfortable. This can be exchanged for the regular suspension if required but even this is a little firm - although improvements have been made over previous models.
The handling in the 3 Series Coupe is fantastic, thanks to a superb chassis which offers near perfect balance and great driver feedback. Whilst the 335d engine is powerful it is also smooth and quiet, with the cabin well insulated from outside sounds, although there is a little wind noise at high speeds.
The 3 Series Coupe is good looking in a classy, understated way and is well kitted out. The Sport Plus coupe comes with leather seats, metallic paint, power steering, stability control, cruise control, climate control, 19 inch alloy wheels, stereo, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity, rear parking sensors and satellite navigation as standard.
The iDrive system is much easier to get to grips with than before and all the controls are angled towards the driver which makes them easier to use.
BMW build their cars very well and so reliability should not be an issue.
Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, dynamic stability control inclusive of anti-lock braking system (ABS) and dynamic traction control. An optional extra is the Active Security Package which includes lane changing and lane departure warning systems. An alarm is a standard feature as well and all of these systems helped the car to achieve the top 5 star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
The coupe has loads of room in the front and back, with plenty of leg room. The boot is of reasonable size too, if a bit awkwardly shaped, with a 440 litre capacity. This can be expanded by collapsing the rear seats which operate on a split-folding mechanism.
The 335d Sport Plus model costs £42,185 and returns 42.8 mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of of 174 g/km, putting it in VED band H.
The less powerful diesels still have great engines and are much more affordable and this means they could be a better option. That being said, the 3 Series benefits from strong resale values thanks to the reputation of the BMW brand.
