This second generation Continental GT exudes luxury and comfort. Its engine is powerful and smooth. Based on its performance the Continental GT could well be the most usable and practical car in its class. It’s refined and fast. However, handling needs some improvement.

PROS:  The Bentley Continental GT could well be the epitome of what a sports coupe should be. Sleek, fast, luxurious and opulent, the Bentley GT is also a comfortable ride. Its powerful engine is refined and refinement is quite remarkable.

CONS:  This Bentley Continental GT is expensive to run. Though the ride is comfortable it is not that remarkable. As with any other coupe, the rear seats are a tad cramped for tall passengers. Though a 3-door car, it is still large and heavy and is not as easy to maneuver around town.

Behind the Wheel

This second generation Bentley coupe has been revised. Though the changes are modest, this edition now has a higher engine output. This ubiquitous and lavish coupe is fitted with a very powerful W12, 48-valve, 5998 cc engine. The engine powers up at 567 bhp at 6000 rpm and has a torque of 516 lb-ft at 1700 rpm. It can go from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds and can easily deliver a top speed of 198 mph.

Note that the 4x4 and W12 chassis of the Continental GT is shared with the BMW 7 series and the Phaeton. Expect much from this car as it has a double turbo-charged W12 under the bonnet. It can readily absorb speed bumps while steering is precise and 'feels' just right. In spite of its size it’s agile and quite poised. Visibility is limited but the parking sensor should take care of that. Engine noise is barely audible at cruising speed.

Looks & Equipment

The Bentley Continental looks is an echo of the first generation model. The changes made are subtle but they definitely defined the coupe more. The interior’s revamped layout exudes posh and high technology. The dashboard is ergonomically laid out. The controls and varied displays are intuitive to use. The paddle-shift system for the gearbox is convenient.

The Bentley Continental is an automatic 6-speed 4-wheel drive 4-seater coupe. It is loaded with standard features such as full leather trim, climate control, power seats, electric and heated mirrors, sat nav and more. Unlike its Jaguar and Mercedes counterparts, cruise control is standard but it will not automatically reduce speed if the car in front slows down. There are various Mulliner trims such as leather and wood for options. As with all Bentleys, customers can specify what they prefer to be included in the car.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

A Bentley Continental is designed with safety and security in mind. The car’s 4-wheel drive system is great for driving on challenging road conditions. Though the car has not undergone the Euro NCAP tests yet, the 4x4 drive chassis and electronic stability control, standard safety systems such as ABS and ESP and airbags in the cabin’s front, side and rear sections are reassuring. The seatbelt pre-tensioners add to the safety factor too. In truth, the GT is one of the safest coupes.

CO2 emission rating for the Continental GT is a high 384g/km which indicates that this car is definitely not a good candidate for a family car. It is not ideal for town driving same as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, Ferrari California and Aston Martin Virage. Boot space is small at only 358 litres. Warranty is three years with unlimited mileage.

Value for Money

The current price of a Bentley Continental GT is £135,760. This tag is lower than an Aston Martin and a Ferrari in the same class. Owned by VW/Audi, the Bentley Continental GT exceeds the quality and reliability of these two brands. With a low mpg figure of 17.1 and high CO2 emissions, the GT is a coupe that has a high running cost. The Road Tax Band Rating is an M which indicates that this car is definitely not eco-friendly.
