The RS5 is a very powerful coupe to drive and has great handling and control thanks to the adaptive suspension and the four-wheel-drive.

It improves on the A5 in lots of ways in both performance and equipment, but this is still a huge amount to pay for a small coupe. Although the drive is great, it is not as good as some other sport cars in its price range and the fuel economy will prove to be very expensive.

PROS:  A huge engine with loads of power. The coupe handles really well thanks to the four-wheel-drive and the adaptive suspension.

CONS:  Enormously expensive to match the engine size. The supposed combined economy will fall even lower when the coupe is driven hard.

Behind the Wheel

The RS5 is a very powerful coupe with an enormous V8 engine, which handles well and has good grip with very strong brakes. The RS5 also comes with adaptive suspension so you can control how firm you want the ride to be.

The engine is 4163cc and uses super unleaded petrol with a fuel tank capacity of 64 litres. There is a seven-speed S Tronic automatic gearbox, which provides smooth acceleration.

The engines (both diesel and petrol) are quiet and refined, but there is a bit of wind noise at high speed and the suspension can be noisy at times too.

The RS5 Quattro has a 444bhp engine delivering 317lb-ft of torque at 4000-6000rpm and reaches 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 155mph.

Looks & Equipment

The interior of the RS5 is well-designed and is an improved version of the A5 cabin, with sleek additions.

The seat and steering wheel adjust comfortably, although the pedals are set off to the right, which can be a bit uncomfortable over long distances and the clutch is in a recess in the floor which makes for awkward control.

The RS5 Quattro comes with leather seats, power steering, climate control, stability control, alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, MP3 connectivity and stereo as standard, with optional extras including Bluetooth for £260, cruise control for £225, satellite navigation for £1525 and metallic paint for £615.

For fuel economy, the RS5 has a start/stop system and electromechanical power steering as standard, which allows for great efficiency and low CO2 emissions.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The RS5 comes with all the safety equipment you would expect in a high-quality coupe including driver, passenger and front side airbags, alarm and immobiliser as standard. It also has stability control to prevent accidents and anti-lock brakes. There are front and back ISOFIX child seat mounting points and options to fit adaptive xenon headlights, lane-departure, a rear-view camera and blind-sport warning systems.

In the past few years, Audi’s reliability rating has suffered, but the closely related A5 range scored Average in the JD Power survey in 2011.

The boot is sizeable offering 455 litres with the rear seats up and 829 litres with the seats folded down. The RS5 coupe can seat four, but the rear is cramped particularly for tall adults, with limited head and leg room.

Value for Money

The running costs are fairly good with the RS5, but with an engine this size the efficiency will figures will always leave a little to be desired, although CO2 emissions are not as bad as other engines this powerful. The RS5 Quattro model costs £58,725 and has a combined economy of 26.2mpg and CO2 emission rate of 252g/km.

The RS5 is an upgrade from the rest of the A5 coupes, but the price for it is enormous. The engine is huge with loads of power and the cabin is sleek and well equipped.

It is a very expensive car to run and the efficient engine does not alter the fuel economy in any substantial way because of the engine size. This car is strictly for those concerned with performance and unconcerned with economy.

The resale value on the RS5 Coupe is great and Audi promise good service and reliability as well.
