The Audi A5 Coupe is a popular choice in the premium sports coupe genre, due to its handsome styling and enviable build quality. It fares well against its rival in terms of price and running costs. It is undeniably a quality product both inside and out, and although there are more fun and rewarding cars in terms of handling it remains a desirable and sensible purchase.

PROS:  A handsome, well engineered coupe, with very reasonable running costs.

CONS:  Not the most involving to drive or most agile car in its class.

Behind the Wheel

The Audi A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic has a 3.0-litre V6 under the bonnet which produces 207bhp and has maximum torque output of 295 lb-ft. Its price tags puts it in the same bracket as the BMW 325d M Sport Auto, which has similar performance figures. The Audi A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic is fitted with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The handling is light and easy, but it is not as light on its feet as the rear wheel drive BMW 3-series, nor does the steering give the same level of feedback.

The Audi A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic matches it rivals in terms of pace, accelerating from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds, and overall the ride quality is very good. Top speed is 146mph.

Looks & Equipment

The A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic is a very handsome looking car. When it underwent its last facelift the front end was tweaked to resemble the rest of the Audi range, and behind that front end is a very well proportioned and clean styled 2-door coupe.

Audi has a deserved reputation for the quality of its interiors, and the A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic is no exception. The quality of the finish inside the car is mightily impressive.

The A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic has, as standard, power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, electric door mirrors, rear parking sensors, leather seats, driver airbag, passenger airbag, front side airbags, alarm & immobiliser, MP3 connectivity, CD player and bluetooth. Cruise control, a standard feature of the BMW 325d M Sport Auto, is an optional extra on the Audi, but the A5 does have bluetooth as standard over its rival, so swings and roundabouts.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

From the inside, the A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic feels sturdy, and is surrounded by driver, passenger, and front side airbags as standard, as is stability control.

The A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic is a 4-seater, but the rear seat space is somewhat restricted. Boot space is favourable compared to its rivals, with 455 litres of boot capacity.

Audi have a pretty impeccable reputation for reliability, and the A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic fits that mould. It comes with a 60,000 mile, 3-year warranty.

Value for Money

The Audi A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic’s price tag falls slightly beneath the BMW 325d M Sport Auto. It is more economical too, with combined returns of an impressive 57.6mpg. Its C02 emissions are comparatively low too, producing just 129g/km which puts the Audi A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic in Road Tax Band D, three lower than the BMW 3-Series. At insurance group 30, the Audi A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic is also going to be less costly to insure too.

Audi’s reputation for build quality and reliability mean the A5 Coupe 3.0 TDI S line Multitronic can be expected to hold its value well when entering the used car market.
