The original Aston Martin Vanquish was in production from 2001 to 2007, and got the James Bond seal of approval by being chosen as his wheels of choice for the film Die Another Day. It was discontinued when production at Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell plant closed in 2007 and was replaced with the DBS, but now the Vanquish is back as the iconic brand’s flagship model.

PROS:  Oozes class, power, and quality from every pore.

CONS:  Not as exhilarating a drive as it could – perhaps should – be.

Behind the Wheel

The Aston Martin Vanquish is a very polished performer, and is much less brutal than you might expect a 565bhp, 6.0-litre V12 supercar to be. Despite those power figures, and torque readings of 457lb-ft at 5,500rpm, the ride is serene with little wind and road noise. The Aston Martin Vanquish Coupe 2dr will do 0-62mph in just 4.1 seconds, and goes all the way up to 183mph, but with the 6-speed automatic gearbox being so slick the application of the car’s impressive levels of power is pleasingly refined. The steering is well balanced, meaning the Vanquish is very well behaved in the bends, with negligible body roll, and it is only on more uneven road surfaces that the ride begins to become remotely jarring. The low driving position and well thought-out dash help the driver feel attuned to the car.

Looks & Equipment

The 2dr coupe body style of the Aston Martin Vanquish is unmistakably Aston, from the wide, horizontal-barred grille, to the huge wheels and swooping roofline leading to a wide rear end. As you would expect from Aston Martin, the Vanquish is impressive on the inside too, manufactured with a top quality feel and with oodles of leather and an extensive list of standard equipment. Power steering, central locking, dynamic stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, rear parking sensor, leather seats, alarm & immobiliser, CD player with Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity, and satellite navigation are all standard issue on the Vanquish.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Vanquish’s luxurious cabin is certainly a more spacious environment for front seat occupants than it is for those consigned to the more restricted rear seats, but the car does redeem itself in the practicality stakes with a 368-lite capacity boot that compares well with its competitors. With driver assistance systems such as dynamic stability control, and a full compliment of airbags including driver, passenger, and front side, the Vanquish provides a safe and secure environment for its inhabitants. Build quality feels exceptionally solid, and the Vanquish gives added peace of mind by benefiting from a 3-year manufacturer's warranty with unlimited mileage.

Value for Money

With a price tag of £189,995 the Aston Martin Vanquish is by no standard cheap to buy and, as you would expect, will not be cheap to run either. The Vanquish has a combined fuel economy figure of 19.6mpg, and with CO2 emissions of 335g/km falls into Road Tax Band M.
