Speed cameras. Love them or loathe them, it seems that they're here to stay.
Since their introduction in 1992, speed cameras have become ubiquitous, inspiring dread in even the most law-abiding motorists. Those of a Daily Mail persuasion argue that the speed camera is an Orwellian device used by the government to control the populace, and many motorists go red in the face when they argue that Gatsos are just another weapon in the war on the motorist.
However, it seems as if the majority of drivers have come to embrace the speed camera, as a new poll from the Institute of Advanced Motorists has found.
82% of motorists now find it acceptable for authorities to use speed cameras, with only 16% labelling their use as 'unacceptable'.
This is in sharp contrast to the 2007 results in the same survey which showed that 30% of motorists were against speed cameras.
However, 45% of drivers still think that raising revenue is the main reason for speed camera use.
So, what are your views on speed cameras? Are they a necessary road safety tool, or simply money-raisers for underworked local councils?
