A new study has revealed what UK motorists are looking for most in their next vehicle, from reliability to fuel economy.

The results, from online sales site Motoring.co.uk's Car Buying Index, show that new car buyers value price above all other attributes in a new motor, followed by reliability and then fuel economy.

The study also shows that Ford is the most desired brand among Britain’s car buyers, whilst premium and value brands are the most popular overall. French car brands are the ones most avoided by British drivers.

Not far behind Ford and making up the top five brands are BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz.

However this does not quite tell the full story, as Ford’s popularity is actually falling while the popularity of several value brands is on the rise. These include Kia, Skoda and Hyundai. France’s three main brands – Renault, Peugeot and Citroen – are all losing popularity, although none of them have the misfortune of being the least popular; that title goes to Vauxhall.

Motoring.co.uk director, Terry Hogan, had this to say: "More consumers are considering new cars at higher values. There is also a growth in interest in the brand they drive and the gadgets that are included, particularly in-car entertainment and connectivity. Value for money is still a big driver in model consideration and that doesn't look like it will change in the short term."

Approximately 40 per cent of us in Britain are planning to purchase a car over the next 12 months.
