VW is rumoured to be considering buying the Malaysian car company Proton.

If the deal goes through, Proton will join the Volkswagen group's long list of subsidiaries which includes Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, SEAT and Skoda.

Proton is a complete joke in the automotive world thanks to a number of absolutely dreadful cars produced by the firm over the years, but VW has an excellent track record of turning failing car companies into credible brands, with Skoda being the obvious example.

VW is also looking to expand its manufacturing operations, with a view to becoming the largest car company in the world by 2018, and Proton's manufacturing facilities would help the German firm churn more cars out.

And don't forget -- Proton owns Lotus.

These are just some of the cars currently made by the Volkswagen Group.
