Volkswagen has announced that it has signed rally ace Sebastian Ogier as a works driver as it continues to prepare for the 2013 introduction of the Volkswagen Polo R to the World Rally Championship.
The Frenchman finished third in this season's World Rally Championship, and joins Volkswagen Motorsport along with co-driver Julien Ingrassia.
"I'm sure that they're going to compete with the goal of clinching the WRC title, and I'm happy to be part of this from the outset," said a confident Ogier of his new team at the announcement in Hanover, while Ingrassia chipped in with, "We're looking forward to a team with a fighting spirit and the determination to win. Anything's possible!"
Volkswagen plans for 2008 Junior World Rally Champion Ogier to play an integral part in the development of the Polo R WRC over the coming months, with the car due to make its debut in the series in 2013. Prior to that, his first engagement as a Volkwagen Motorsport works driver will be to compete in the Race of Champions in Dusseldorf at the beginning of next month.
"The aim of putting a competitive Polo R WRC on the road for them as quickly as possible will additionally drive our team. We look forward to working with Sebastian and Julien and are hoping for many victories and titles in the future," said Volkswagen's Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.
At Volkswagen, Ogier will be hoping to add to his career victory tally of seven World Rally Championship wins, five of which came last season when his victory tally equalled that of eventual champion Sebastian Loeb.
