Volkswagen has expanded the Passat range with the addition of a new R-line trim level and a new, more efficient 1.4-litre petrol engine.
The new Passat R-line comes with a bespoke bodykit which VW claims "gives a sleek and sporty image." At the front, a new bumper design includes fog lights with cornering function, while at the rear the car gets a new bumper and a bootlid spoiler. Bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime-running lights and LED taillights are also included as standard.
VW has also lowered the car by 15mm and added 18-inch 'Kansas' alloy wheels and dark-tinted rear windows.
On the inside, the R-line gets a leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth, USB and iPod connectivity and DAB digital radio.
The R-line trim is available on the 1.4-litre TSI, 1.6-litre TDI and 2.0-litre TDI models in the Passat range, with both six-speed manual gearboxes, a six-speed DSG on the 2.0-litre and a seven-speed DSG on the 1.4.
The 1.4-litre engine replaces the existing 1.8-litre petrol in the range, offering lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy. With the DSG gearbox, the new engine is capable of returning a combined 46.3mpg, while emitting just 142g/km of CO2.
Prices for the Passat R-line start at £22,115 for the manual 1.6-litre TDI saloon, rising to £26,385 for the 2.0-litre TDI estate with the DSG gearbox.
