The Volvo V40 will be granted a lower insurance rating thanks to its innovative safety features, entitling owners to cheaper insurance.
The entire V40 range will be rated two to three insurance groups lower than usual, depending on the specific model.
This news comes after thorough testing of the car's City Safety technology at the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre in Thatcham, Berkshire.
It's the V40's Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system which accounts for the lower insurance rating. At speeds of up to 31mph, the system automatically slows or stops the car if it detects an imminent crash.
The V40 has already been named one of the safest cars on the road, achieving an excellent score in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
The Swedish manufacturer has set itself a target of ensuring that no one should die or be seriously injured in a Volvo car by the year 2020. And while this goal may seem slightly optimistic, credit must be given to Volvo for making its new V40 a class-leader in safety.
Volvo Car Corporation's director of governmental affairs Anders Eugensson said:
"Safety remains very much at the heart of Volvo's design and technology ethos.
"It is tremendous that our efforts are now reaping additional benefits for drivers: lower insurance ratings mean reduced premiums."
