The CEO of Volvo, Stefan Jacoby, has promised that Volvo will not compromise its position as a world leading brand for automotive safety as the company doubles production to 800,000 cars.

Volvo is currently beginning a new phase in its development, in which it will double production to 800,000 cars per year, and seek to gain recognition as a more design-driven brand. But amidst these changes the CEO of the firm has promised that the company will not compromise in the one area where Volvo has always had a good reputation - safety.

"Safety is in our genes and we will not give that up," Jacoby announced at the Detroit Motor Show.

The CEO of Volvo expressed confidence that the company is in a strong position to take a leading position on safety for electric vehicles, rear passenger protection, and advanced systems to mitigate the consequences of collisions with pedestrians.

"The requirements of Euro NCAP will increase and we will develop new passive and active safety systems," he said.

"We are in the lead with the safety of EVs (electric vehicles) and are setting the same standards with all kinds of electric vehicles as we are with conventional cars."

He also added that the new ownership of Volvo by Chinese luxury car brand Geely offers the company a unique chance to lead Europe in the field of rear passenger protection. That is because luxury car buyers in China are often chauffeured rather than taking the wheel themselves, meaning that rear passenger protection takes on a special priority.

Amongst the safety innovations already implemented by Volvo, the City Safe System stands out as one of the most advanced. This works using sensors and automated interventions to prevent low speed collisions or to reduce their effects, and Volvo are currently working to develop this sustem further so that collisions with animals can be either avoided or made less serious. The firm are also working on improving protection from side-on collisions, and on the development of a more advanced cruise control system.
