The Volkswagen up! city car will benefit from an extra level of practicality with the introduction of a new five door option.
The new five-door up! will not be a big departure from the three-door model apart from the enhanced ease of access. The 2.42m wheelbase remains the same, as does the 251-litres of storage space in the boot. Back seat passengers will have the same amount of space as in the three-door model, but the base of the back seats is set a little bit higher than the front seats, giving passengers a better view of the road ahead.
The Volkswagen up! comes with front and side airbags as standard, along with ABS and Hydraulic Brake Assist, Isofix child seat preparation in the rear, and ESP. It can also be specified with City Emergency Braking system (for an extra £225), which uses sensors to scan the road ahead of the vehicle and can automatically engage the brakes if a collision is imminent. These advanced safety features helped the up! to become the first car in its class to win a top five star rating from Euro NCAP, as well as the 'Advanced Award' from the European New Car Assessment Programme.
The three-door up! is priced from £7,995 on the road and is available to order now, with the first deliveries taking place in March. The price of the new five-door model has not yet been announced, but it is expected to hit the showrooms in the second half of this year.
