Vauxhall is set to replace its current core engine line-up with three new families of petrol and diesel engine.
The new engines promise to be more economical, powerful, refined and environmentally-friendly than the current range of Vauxhall units.
The first of these new engines is a new 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine, developing up to 197bhp and 221lb-ft of torque. The engine should be very economical, thanks to start/stop technology and spark ignition direct injection, and should be up to 13% cleaner than its predecessor.
Duncan Aldred, Chairman and MD of Vauxhall, said, "Replacing core engine ranges with high-output, high efficiency units will enhance our cars' appeal still further and reinforce our commitment to producing first-class products."
Vauxhall has not detailed which models will benefit from this new engine, nor has it revealed information about the remaining two engines which it plans to develop.
Production of the new 1.6-litre turbo-petrol unit will begin later this year at Vauxhall's Szentgotthardt plant in Hungary.
