Vauxhall have been celebrating fifty years of manufacturing at its Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire.

To commemorate the golden jubilee, an example of the first car produced at the plant - the Vauxhall Viva HA - returned to where it first rolled off the line in June 1964.  At that time, the Viva HA would set you back the princely sum of £527 7s 11d, and the Cheshire plant continued to produce the Viva through its various generations until it was replaced by the Chevette in 1978.

The Ellsmere Port factory was built on the site of the former RAF Hooton Park as part of a government scheme to revitalise industry in the area, with the Board of Trade offering a 25% inducement towards construction costs.

The plant has produced the Vauxhall Astra for over three decades.  Vauxhall's first front-wheel drive car, the Astra began rolling off the Ellesmere Port productions lines in November 1981, and the manufacturer has confirmed that it will be the lead plant for producing the next generation of the hugely successful model when it is launched later next year.
