Vauxhall has slashed £3,500 off the price of its Ampera in an attempt to boost sales of the range-extender hybrid electric car.
The price reduction means that the Ampera now starts from £28,750 including the £5,000 Government grant for plug-in vehicles.
"Ampera's new price position brings the cost of electric motoring much nearer to that of a conventional vehicle," said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall Managing Director. "It also reinforces the multi award-winning Ampera's position as the only solution to electric vehicle ownership that can be the sole family car."
The decision follows disappointing sales for the Ampera and its sister car, the Chevrolet Volt. By cutting the Ampera's price, Vauxhall will be hoping it can tempt more people out of conventionally-powered cars into the hybrid.
The Vauxhall Ampera is powered by a 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor. It can travel for 50 miles on electric power alone and for more than 300 miles when the range-extending petrol engine comes into play.
