A new study suggests that the motoring industry is now 'greener' than ever. Vehicle CO2 emissions in the UK have dropped by almost a quarter since 2000.

The average CO2 emissions released by new cars are falling every year. Since last year, the average emissions dropped by 4.2% to 138.1g/km CO2 (equivalent to 52.5mpg) - and by an astonishing 23% if the 2012 figures are compared to those in 2000.

Specific figures reveal that new cars registered in the UK last year were up to 18% more fuel efficient and cleaner than the average car being driven on British roads these days.

This is according to figures from a new study published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in its 11th annual New Car CO2 report.

"[The] Industry can be proud of the progress it has made in reducing CO2 emissions and improving fuel efficiency, 23 per cent since 2000. The UK motor industry recognises its responsibilities and the industrial opportunities from the transition to ultra-low carbon vehicles," said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive.

In fact, up to 46.8% of today's new cars had emissions below the 2015 European legislative target of 130g/km CO2.

These reductions happened in all vehicles, no matter their size and segment. The biggest drop over the past year was made among Executive and Specialist Sports cars, with CO2 emissions falling 9.5% and 7.0%, respectively, when compared to 2010 figures.

However, the segments that reduced their emissions the most in the last 12 years were named as the Executive (by 34.9%) and Mini (29.9%).

Everitt is pleased with the progress made so far in this area, but feels there is still more to be done:

"Future environmental and economic success will be determined by sustained investment in new technology, R&D, infrastructure and consumer incentives. We are seeing steady improvement in conventional technologies and the emergence of a range of alternative technologies, creating one of the most innovative periods for the global automotive industry."
