The Jubilee weekend may be over but it seems that the UK still has a reason to celebrate as the three-millionth engine has been produced at BMW's Hams Hall plant.

The engine in question was a 1.6-litre four-pot petrol unit which will be fitted to a MINI at BMW's Oxford facility.

The MINI has been a huge success story for the British car industry -- 80% of the MINIs produced in the UK are exported, and over 1.6-million have been shipped worldwide since the car went into production in 2001.

Facilities at Hams Hall are set to be upgraded to allow the production of the next generation of BMW engines at the site.

Mark Prisk, Business Minister, said, "BMW’s three millionth engine in a MINI that's now exported to 100 countries is emblematic of the current success of the UK auto sector."
