Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show positive results for the UK car manufacturing industry last month.
UK car manufacturing grew by 15.6% in the first month of this year on the back a sixteen-month record high of 127,382 units built. These figures included a 12.9% growth in the number of cars built in the UK for the export market. In addition, UK engine production rose by 5.0% during the same period.
Commercial Vehicle production figures are less pleasing, with a slight drop in output by 1.2%. There was a 0.7% increase in the number of UK-built Commercial Vehicles for the export market, but the overall figure was affected by poor demand in the domestic market.
The Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Paul Everitt, said of the figures, "It is essential government and industry continue the successful partnership that has helped deliver new investment and supply chain opportunities to secure long-term prosperity and jobs. UK car production continues to drive manufacturing growth and a rebalancing of the economy."
