Only three countries in the world charge more than the UK for a litre of diesel, according to a new study.

The research, conducted by This is Money and Looking4Parking.com, shows that a litre of diesel in Britain priced at £1.41 costs just 9p less than the world’s most expensive, which can be found in Norway.

Additionally, drivers will not be happy to learn that a whopping 86p – more than 60% - from every litre is taken up by fuel duty and taxes.

However, in actual fact the figures are not half as bad as they sound when considering the average monthly income in the country after tax. In Britain, only 7.9% of this is spent on fuel. Compare this with Turkey for example, where monthly wages are considerably lower yet diesel is the third most expensive in the world at £1.44, and we can consider ourselves somewhat fortunate in the UK. A huge 25.8% of monthly post-tax income is spent on fuel in Turkey.

Surprisingly, despite paying the highest prices in the world, Norwegians spend only 5.2% per month on fuel due to higher average monthly incomes. This is the lowest in the top 10. Find out how much you spend on fuel here and try these ten tips to reduce your own fuel expenditure.

In fact, when comparing the 10 countries charging the most for a litre of diesel to the 10 countries in which citizens spend the highest proportion of their average monthly incomes after tax on fuel, the results illustrate how the title of this article can be somewhat misleading.
