Toyota is recalling 7.4 million cars, including 138,000 UK models, over a fault with electric window switches.

Vehicles affected by the recall include Yaris, RAV4, Auris and Corolla models built between September 2006 and December 2008.

The problem is that the electric window switch in the driver's door can begin to feel notchy over time. The switch is not designed to be lubricated with conventional lubricants, and doing so could cause the switch to overheat or melt, potentially starting a fire.

Despite the concerns, however, Toyota claims that no accidents, injuries or deaths have been caused by the fault.

Toyota will contact owners of affected vehicles over the next six weeks to arrange an appointment with their local dealer to rectify the issue. The work will take around an hour to complete and will be free of charge.

Meanwhile, if owners have any concerns over the issue, they can call Toyota customer relations on 01737 367600.
