Toyota is recalling 2.77 million vehicles worldwide over a steering shaft defect which could potentially result in steering and water pump problems.

The recall affects 75,000 UK-registered Toyotas including certain Avensis and Corolla models registered between July 2001 and March 2009, and certain Prius models bought between July 2003 and April 2009.

The steering defect could potentially allow drivers to lose control of the vehicle, while the water pump issue could render the car undriveable. However, despite this, Toyota claims that no accidents have arisen from the issue and that the cars remain safe to drive.

The announcement comes just a month after Toyota announced a recall of 7.4million cars over a faulty window switch.
