There may be trouble ahead, but Toyota aims to keep its drivers informed with an industry-first introduction of the TPEG traffic information system.

TPEG - short for Travel Protocol Expert Group - is an integral part of Toyota's Touch Pro multimedia system, which will be a standard feature on new Land Cruiser V8s, and an optional extra on the new Prius T Spirit.

The DAB digital-based TPEG is claimed to offer a greater and more accurate level of information than existing analogue systems. Working with the on-board satellite navigation systems it will provide up-to-date information on roadworks, accidents, and jams, and armed with details on traffic speeds, queue length, and impact on overall travel time, will then be able to make a better informed solution to re-routing. This new level of intelligence is enabled by a ten-times greater bandwith with the digital TPEG system than the current analogue RDS-TMC service. In addition, TPEG's greater level of accuracy in terms of location through the use of latitude and longitiude co-ordinates is hoped to aid in alerting and re-routing drivers before they become caught up in tailbacks.
