The bZ4X is a practical SUV with a high-tech interior that feels very airy inside thanks to a flat floor that’s possible because of the car’s EV underpinnings. Toyota claims the car will have nearly a metre’s worth of rear legroom and you get a 452-litre boot.

You also get a very modern design courtesy of large infotainment screens behind the steering wheel and in the centre of the dashboard. Physical buttons remain, but are limited to systems like the stereo and ventilation. The result is a clean, fuss-free look.

There are plenty of innovative features including a heat pump that warms the cabin more efficiently than a regular fan heater and an infra-red heater that aims its warming rays at you and your front passenger’s legs.

Both heaters are designed to save electricity so as much of the 71.4kWh battery’s power reserves as possible can be used for propulsion. As a result, the Toyota has a range of up to 280 miles in front-wheel drive form or 255 miles with all-wheel drive.

The former does 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds while the latter shaves that down to 7.7 seconds – both can tow up to 750kg and get autonomous driving aids that mean the bZ4X can do most of the driving itself.

Prices start from £41,950 for a Pure model that gets 18-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera and climate control.

Motion versions cost from £45,750 in front-wheel-drive form or £48,350 with all-wheel drive. These sporty models get 20-inch wheels, tinted windows and a roof spoiler. Inside, there’s wireless phone charging, heated seats, and a glass roof.

Vision models cost £47,650 (front-wheel drive) or £50,250 (all-wheel drive). They add synthetic leather seats that are heated as well as cooled, you can also open and start the car using your phone and you get an electrically operated boot lid.

Premier Edition models sit at the top of the range and come with all-wheel drive only, the cost? A healthy £51,550. Premier Editions addsto Vision spec with a JBL stereo and a glass roof.
