In a new experiment to test the fuel efficiency of the new Toyota Avensis, the vehicle amazingly covered 905 miles on only one tank of diesel.

If there is something that Toyota wants British consumers to remember about its new Avensis Tourer, it is its fuel efficiency. With a 2.0-litre D-4D engine, the vehicle covered Britain end-to-end on only one tank of diesel.

Journalists for Banzai magazine, Joe Clifford and Andrew Biddle, undertook this challenge by driving the car across the UK. Both journalists crossed the country in a standard Avensis T Spirit Tourer, powered by the latest version of Toyota's 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine.

According to Toyota, the high efficiency of the engine and six-speed manual transmission, together with the journalists' eco-conscious driving style allowed the Avensis to travel 904.9 miles at an average 71.5mpg - which is slightly less than the car's official extra urban consumption figure.

"The Toyota shrugged off the mileage with ease and showed such frugality for fuel that we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it highly. That it is also comfortable, roomy, tax-friendly for business users, bursting with kit and beautifully built are simply bonuses," said Clifford commenting on his 'adventure'.

Prius Plug-In Hybrid

Toyota is becoming increasingly well-known for building environmentally-friendly vehicles. In line with the Avensis' efficiency, Toyota recently released the official EU emissions and economy figures regarding the Prius Plug-In Hybrid.

As the car maker revealed, the new Prius Plug-In Hybrid is the most efficient Toyota ever on British roads, emitting only 49g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle.

The Hybrid only mode (HV) figures have improved upon the current standard Prius, with CO2 emissions of 85g/km and 76.4 miles on one gallon of petrol. In addition, Toyota claims that, at only 90 minutes to charge using a conventional plug, recharging is quicker than any other electric vehicle on the market today.
