80% of motorists agree that drivers who repeatedly drink and drive should have the cars confiscated and sold or scrapped, according to a new survey from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
66% of drivers would also like to see the drink-drive limit reduced, with the majority agreeing that a 50mg per 100ml limit would be appropriate. Over a quarter of respondents believed that there should be a zero-tolerance policy to drink-driving.
However, over half of motorists think that if the drink-drive limit is lowered, there should be more lenient penalties for those caught over the new limit, but below the current one.
57% of motorists also believe that the penalty for drink driving -- a one year ban and an average fine of £240 -- is too soft, and 38% think the penalties should be much tougher.
