The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued some handy advice to drivers which should help take the stress out of the airport run this summer.

“The last thing you need on the day you start your holiday is unwanted stress from a lack of preparation and a shortage of time”, said Peter Rodger, chief examiner for the road safety charity. “Preparing yourself and your vehicle before the big day and setting off nice and early will remove the obstacles to you taking full advantage of Duty Free. Enjoy your holiday.”
The IAM advises thorough vehicle check before setting off, including fluid levels, tyres, mirrors and windows.  Setting aside the time to do this could help prevent a costly and holiday-ruining breakdown.
If you cannot fit all your luggage in the boot and need to put some on the back seat, make sure it is secured in place and doesn’t obstruct your view.
Allow plenty of time for your journey to the airport.  If you leave yourself a rush to meet your check in time you’ll be more likely to make silly mistakes or be tempted to break the speed limit.
Plan your route the day before, check travel reports for road closures and disruptions before heading to the airport.
Try and get plenty of sleep the night before leaving for the airport to help ensure you’re alert for the drive ahead.  If it’s a long drive to the airport consider leaving yourself enough time to take a rest break.
When you get to the airport, choosing a spot in the car park which is not too crowded will reduce the chances of another holidaymaker clipping your car with their luggage.
