With fuel prices set to rise even further, more and more motorists are choosing to use their bicycles for short journeys. The Institute of Advanced Motorists has therefore decided to offer some top cycling tips from advanced driver, Peter Rodger.
- Make sure your bike is set up correctly. Test the brakes and gears and ensure that the saddle is set at the right height - you should be able to touch the ground with the balls of both feet.
- Make sure your tyres are inflated correctly.
- Keep a door's width from parked cars in case someone opens their door without looking.
- Always wear a helmet. Try and wear bright, reflective clothes when cycling in the dark and remember that, to ride at night, you must have both front and rear lights.
- Ride defensively - never assume that motorists can see you.
- Never wait on the nearside of buses and lorries at junctions - they may not be able to see you. If you can't get in front of them when it's time to pull away, hold back and cycle behind them.
