With torrential rain expected over the next couple of days, the Institute of Advanced Motorists is offering motorists advice on driving in heavy rain.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger says, "When driving in wet conditions remember that stopping distances will increase, and visibility will be reduced. Drop your speed and give yourself more time to slow down."
The Institute has also released these helpful tips on driving through deep water:
- Drive on the highest section of the road.
- Don't set off if another vehicle is approaching you, and leave space for other vehicles and pedestrians.
- Drive slowly and, if you drive a manual, slip the clutch to keep the revs high.
- Don't drive into deep water if you can't see where it ends (such as on a blind bend).
- Don't take your foot off the gas -- water may travel up the exhaust pipe.
- Once you're out of the water, dry your brakes by lightly applying them for a few seconds, making sure there isn't anyone close behind you.
