The Institute of Advanced Motorists has released advice for drivers during times of low sun which can be a major distraction at this time of year.
Low sun can make it difficult to see other cars, people or features in the road and increase the likelihood for accident and injuries at the wheel. Taking on board some of the following tips can dramatically reduce that likelihood and make for a much safer driving experience.
When its low take it slow – You should always be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear. If the sun is reducing your vision then slow down in order to give yourself that braking distance. If people behind are tailgating then don’t be tempted to speed up to appease them.
Sunglasses at the ready – Your sun visor won’t always offer you full protection so keep a pair of sunglasses handy in the car so you can take the out when needed.
Switch them on – If driving before sunset then turn your headlights on to help other road users see you. The same goes for after sunrise when they should be left on until the light level builds up.
Dip them low – Consider dipping your mirrors to avoid glare when dong your checks.
Wash them clean – Use screen washer fluid and keep your bottle topped up to allow you to clean dirt and grime from the windscreen.
Avoid direct gazing – Don’t look directly into the sun. If your vision becomes blurred or hazy then pull over and take a break.
