The Institute of Advanced Motorists has warned against the risks posed by drivers using the new Apple invention which will send notifications through a wristwatch device.
The new technology has been announced alongside the soon to arrive iPhone 6 and new iOS 8 operating system. It is said to allow the wearer to receive notifications through their watch and even take phone calls. The IAM has expressed concerns that this level of distraction could seriously impair driving ability and increase the number of road accidents.
The Department for Transport has made it clear that the use of an Apple Watch at the wheel will carry the same punishment as the use of a phone, 3 penalty points and a fine of £100.
Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research said: “An iWatch has the potential to be just as distracting as any other Smartphone device. Indeed more so if you have to take your hand off the wheel and your eyes off the road to interact with it.
“Enforcement will be difficult for the police, but powers exist to seize and interrogate devices in the event of a serious crash. The very device that distracted you also has the power to convict you."
So, if you are planning on getting this shiny new Apple device, don't forget to 'watch' the road...
