With digital dashboards becoming an increasingly common fixture in modern cars, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has released some top tips on using them safely from advanced driver Peter Rodger.

Although some of this advice seems almost ridiculously obvious, it never hurts to be reminded that getting distracted behind the wheel can be the difference between life and death.

  • Set your sat-nav before you set off, and compile a music playlist so you don't have to fiddle around with the stereo on the move.
  • Pull over if you need to reset your sat-nav.
  • Make sure you know where you're going - don't rely on the sat-nav.
  • Don't use any of the technology on the dashboard while you're on the go.
  • Make sure you know how all of the technology on your dash works.

Rodger said, "While digital dashboards are becoming a popular accessory in luxury cars, they can be very distracting. Missing a petrol station, or point of interest you're looking for is annoying, but the alternative is potentially fatal. Pull over first."
