Volvo claim to be building the cleanest and most powerful SUV in the world.

The new XC90 will be out later this year and Volvo have been looking to design a vehicle with all the necessary power but with low Carbon Dioxide emissions. The final result is an SUV which offers the motorist 400 horsepower but with 60g/km in emissions.

"There are no compromises when you drive an all-new XC90," said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. "

In the past you could either have power or low CO2 emissions. But with the all-new XC90 you can have both."

The first XC90 was released in 2002 and has been developing towards hybrid power in recent years. The new model will make use of twin engine technology to give it the green credentials that many modern consumers demand. This twin engine will be signified by the T8 badge and will provide petrol power to the front wheels whilst a 60kW electric motor will provide the drive for the rear wheels.

Recent moves forward in chassis design mean that space inside the car is not compromised by the twin engine set-up. Volvo use Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) to produce a chassis which can accommodate new engine technologies and eliminate the risk of boot space or passenger comfort being affected.
