Suzuki has announced prices and specs for its new S-Cross, which will go on sale from October 1.

The model will be priced from £14,999 which, crucially, is cheaper than the starting prices of its main rivals. The Nissan Qashqai costs from £16,895, the Ford Kuga is priced from £20,900 and the Mazda CX-5 starts from £21,595.

There will be four trim levels available - SZ3, SZ4, SZ-T and SZ5 – and all models come as standard with ESP and seven airbags. The SZ3 spec includes cruise control, 16-inch alloys, air conditioning, electric door mirrors and an MP3-compatible stereo.

SZ4 S-Cross models cost from £16,249 and add keyless go, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 17-inch alloys, automatic air conditioning, Bluetooth and front fog lights.

Buyers opting for the SZ-T trim will benefit from rear parking sensors and a rear parking camera, a chrome exterior styling package, a DAB radio and sat-nav. Prices start at £17,749.

Step up to the top-spec SZ5, which will cost from £19,749, and you’ll also get leather seats, a double sliding panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, projector headlights, auto lights and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Two engines will be available with the S-Cross; buyers will choose between a petrol and a diesel, both of which are 118bhp 1.6-litre offerings. The petrol engine is available with a 5-speed transmission, while the diesel is only available with a 6-speed gearbox – both are manual. As standard the car is a front-wheel drive, but those opting for one of the top two trim levels will have the option of Suzuki’s ALLGRIP four-wheel drive system. SZ5 buyers can also opt for a CVT transmission.

The front-wheel drive S-Cross petrol will return 51.3mpg, Suzuki claims. It will emit 127g/km with a manual transmission or 125g/km with the CVT.

With the four-wheel drive option the petrol manual will deliver 47.8mpg and emit 135g/km. The same car with the CVT transmission delivers a slightly better 49.5mpg and emits 130g/km.

Figures for the diesel engine are more favourable, with the two-wheel drive model returning 67.2mpg and emitting 110g/km. With the ALLGRIP four-wheel drive option the diesel will return 64.2mpg and emit 114g/km CO2.
