A new Swift Sport model from Suzuki will go on sale in the UK from January 2012.

Suzuki are adding a new model to their Swift range - the Swift Sport - offering higher levels of engine tuning, steering refinement, and braking performance compared to the standard Swift model on which it is based. The Suzuki Swift Sports will be available to buy from January 2012 with a list price of £13,500.

The new Swift Sport will be the performance flagship for the Swift range, and aims to further develop the firm's attempt to develop a refined sport compact, offering better handling and improved engine performance compared to the regular Swift 1.2-litre, which was launched in the UK late last year.

The external design of the new car will look more sporty than its predecessors, thanks to aerodynamic body parts which serve to control the airflow around the car, suppress lift, and lower the centre of gravity. This sporty look is enhanced by new High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with metallic grey coating, and a new design for the rear combination lamps. Five colours of metallic/pearlescent paint will be made available to buyers: Silky Silver, Kashmir Blue Pearl, Cosmic Black Pearl, Cool White pearl, and Ablaze Red Pearl.

Inside the vehicle the sporty theme is continued with newly designed sport seats and a five-dial meter cluster.

A number of refinements have been introduced to improve the handling of the new car. These include greater tow and camber rigidity for the torsion beam, higher lateral rigidity in the torsion-beam bushing and larger rear wheel bearings to enhance stability at the back end when cornering hard. Increased spring rates on the front and rear coil springs and additional rebound springs in the front suspension also improve stability, whilst modifications to the steering-gearbox member and suspension-frame member, along with bigger front wheel bearings serve to boost the yaw response to provide more refined handling.

Under the bonnet the new Swift Sport's M16A engine is largely based on the engine from the previous model, but now offers increased power along with lower emissions. The addition of a variable intake system and optimization of the intake Variable Valve Timing, plus increased valve lift, has increased the power delivered by the revamped engine to a maximum of 136bhp - up 13bhp from the standard model. Meanwhile the CO2 emissions are down from 165g/km to 147g/km, which represents a 10% reduction. The new Swift Sport also benefits from an all-new 6-speed manual transmission.

A good range of safety equipment is also included as standard with the new model, including 7 airbags and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). The car's pillars also incorporate shock-absorbing materials to protect the occupants' heads in the event of a collision.
