The revamped Smart car has been unveiled and will also come in a four seat version.
The Smart city car has gained iconic status following its release in 1998, its unique appearance and dinky dimensions have set it apart from other small equivalents. The new version will be the same length as the current models which will come as welcome news to those who love its manoeuvrability and ease of parking. It will measure 2.69m in length and use clever rear wheel drive technology to maximise cabin space.
"In the planning phase we were clear that we wanted to retain the rear engine for the new smart, so as to continue to exploit the vehicles' strengths to the full in the city," says Jörg Prigl, head of compact cars at Mercedes-Benz. "On this basis, we then developed the new ForTwo and ForFour together with our partner, Renault."
The ForFour model will be a stretched out version of the ForTwo and will use the same rear will technology but with a Renault Twingo platform, the aim being to target city families who need seating but still desire a small vehicle. Both models will use the ‘Tridion’ safety cell which has become notorious for its levels of protection and will be available in the UK from November. Prices are yet to be announced.
