Remember Saab? Well, it seems that the defunct Swedish car manufacturer could be back with us much sooner than expected.

National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), the company which bought Saab earlier this year, has announced that the Saab 9-3 could be relaunched as early as mid-2013, according to a report from Automotive News.

And, despite reports that the new 9-3 would be an electric car, NEVS is looking to reintroduce the Saab with a petrol engine.

"We have not taken any decisions yet, but we are evaluating the possibility," said NEVS spokesman Mikael Ostlund.

"If it is possible for the suppliers to deliver parts that allow production to begin next summer of the existing 9-3 with a traditional powertrain we think there is a market for it."

Ostlund claimed that production of a new petrol-powered 9-3 would not affect the company's plans to introduce an all-electric model.
