Jan Ake Jonsson, the CEO of Swedish car maker Saab, has announced that he plans to retire on May 19th.
The current CEO of Saab, Jan Ake Jonsson, is a true veteran of the company, having spent almost 40 years working there and having led the company for the last 6 years. Announcing his decision to retire Jonsson told the press that the past three years had taken a toll on his personal life, forcing him to devote all of his time and energy to the company. Because of this, he said, it is now time for him to step back from the reigns and free up some time to devote to those other parts of his life which have had to take a back seat to his career during his time as CEO.
Jonsson also talked about how proud he is to have been able to refresh Saab’s entire portfolio, as well as introducing new models to the range, such as the upcoming 9-4x and the 9-3, which he confirmed will be launched in October 2012. Running through his achievements with the company Jonsson said that he is convinced that he has managed to put the company on the right track, putting in place a sound business model for a stand-alone company with a strong product range.
Filling the gap left by the retiring CEO will not be an easy job, but we are assured that Jonsson will remain with the company until September to make sure that the transition goes smoothly, and that until a suitable successor has been found the Spyker CEO Victor Muller will take on the top job at Saab.
But despite losing such a powerful figure within the company it is not all bad news for Saab today, as they also announced that they have signed a deal with Armand Import, as Moscow based company, which could transform the company’s fortunes in Russia when the agreement is put into action from the middle of 2011. And they are also seeking to break into the world’s biggest car market in China, by signing a deal with CATC, the China Automobile Trading Co, which will lead to Saab cars going on sale in China from September 2011. Saab are hoping that their 9-5 and new 9-4X will prove to be big successes in China, a development which could prove to be very lucrative for the company in the future.
