Renault has welcomed the extension of the government electric vehicle grant scheme to include vans.

Renault are one of the industry's leading manufacturers when it comes to making electric powered vans, so the company has welcomed the recent announcement that the Plug-in Car Grant is not only being extended until 2015, but will also now include vans as well as cars. With the new grant taken into account, the Kangoo Van Z.E., which currently costs £21,038 OTR, will cost just £16,960.40. The five-seat Kangoo Z.E. MaxiCrew, which currently costs £23,078, will cost £18,592.40 with the 20% price reduction offered by the grant. With its four-model Z.E. range, including three new electric cars scheduled for UK launch by Autumn this year, Renault stands to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the extended grant scheme.

The extension of the Plug-In Car Grant, which offers 20% off the retail price of new cars up to a maximum of £8000, was announced earlier today by the Transport Minister Norman Baker and Business Minister Mark Prisk.

Renault’s 100% electric Kangoo Van Z.E. which was launched just a month ago, is the world's first electric commercial vehicle produced directly by a mass-market manufacturer. As such it is expected to be one of only a small number of electric vans which meet the eligibility requirements for the grant programme.

Andy Heiron, Head of Electric Vehicle Programme at Renault UK, commeted on the announcement:

"Having actively lobbied for the inclusion of commercial vehicles in the Plug-In Car Grant scheme over the past year, we're delighted that the Government has acted and made this announcement. This addresses the big question that many customers and industry commentators have been asking us for many months and I think we can expect to see a surge in demand. Allied to the environmental and corporate social responsibility benefits of running an EV, a fully electric van for less than £17,000 on-the-road with significantly lower running costs than a diesel, is a very compelling financial argument in favour of Kangoo Van Z.E."
