With the arrival of Renault’s new Z.E. (Zero Emission) range of electric cars fast approaching, the French manufacturer has decided to beef up its eco credentials even further with the announcement of a new, cleaner and more efficient version of its popular Clio car.

The new 1.5-litre diesel engine supermini will build on the success of the older version which had CO2 emissions of 98g/km with a range of new enhancements that reduce emissions to 94g/km.

These figures can be attained when buyers choose to add the option of an 'Eco Pack', which can be added to the Expression trim level versions of Clio 3 and 5-door cars as an optional extra costing £250 on top of the list prices of £12,200 and £12,800 OTR.

This Eco Pack brings the cost of a three door Clio up to just £12,450, which makes it the cheapest sub-100g/km supermini on sale in the UK. The equivalent low emission Volkswagon Polo BlueMotion has a list price of £14,860, while the Ford Fiesta Econetic costs £13,895.

Considering the high cost of diesel these days, the Renault eco2 model will also save a great deal of money for its owners thanks to the excellent fuel economy that it offers. Combined fuel consumption comes in at 78.4mpg, an improvement of 2.1mpg which allows drivers to travel an impressive 949 miles on a single tank. Because of the low emissions, it is also free from Vehicle Excise Duty and from the London Congestion Charge, and for business customers it has a low benefit-in-kind rating of 13% and a 100% Capital Write Down Allowance.

Buyers of the new Eco Pack will also get 15-inch Aero wheel trims with body-coloured Aero rear spoiler and ultra-low resistance tyres, as well as some clever tweaks under the bonnet to deliver the improved efficiency.

Standard features on the basic Expression versions are limited, but include 4x20W RDS radio CD player with fingertip remote control, and electric front windows and door mirrors. Optional extras include air conditioning, tinted windows, and fully integrated Carminat TomTom Live satellite navigation system.

Improvements not related to fuel efficiency and cleanliness include a soft-touch dashboard for the entry level expression, which also gets satin chrome touches, and new 'Sport' upholstery. The Dynamique model also gets some enhancements, including a gloss back finish on the centre console, dash inserts and air vent surrounds, and gun metal 16 inch Solonia alloy wheels previously only seen on the top of the range GT line.
